Ernst Haas: The Forces of Abstraction
Les Douches la Galerie is pleased to present a new exhibition dedicated to Ernst Haas (1921–1986). Featuring around twenty color photographs, primarily taken in New York, the exhibition unveils the most personal and poetic project of the American photographer, centered on abstraction. This remarkable series coincides with the release of a landmark book this fall, Ernst Haas Abstract, a significant addition to his bibliography.
Ernst Haas’ Abstract project represents one of the boldest and most personal milestones in the work of this pioneer of color photography. Conceived in the 1970s as an audiovisual slideshow, Abstract drew inspiration from images created throughout the photographer’s career, spanning from 1952 to 1984. Largely unknown to the general public, this intricate project embodies Haas’ singular vision of photography as a fluid, poetic, and ever-evolving art form. For Ernst Haas, this decades-long project marked the pinnacle of his career, an unrelenting quest for abstract images drawn from both nature and everyday life.
