After studying pharmacy, André Papillon learned photography in 1932 from his brother-in-law François Kollar and embarked on a career in advertising. A committed photographer and member of the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists (AEAR), he went on assignment for Paris-Match in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War and published other images exposing poverty in France in VU, Regards, and Voilà. After the war, he produced numerous covers for women's magazines, then opened an advertising studio in 1950.
