Ghislaine Vappereau French, b. 1953
Ghislaine Vappereau is a French visual artist, born in 1953 in Paris. She earned a PhD in visual arts from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 1979, followed by a post-doctoral qualification to supervise research (HDR) in 1996 at the University of Picardy Jules Verne (UPJV) in Amiens.
Her work, which includes installations, sculptures, drawings, and photographs, revolves around the reinterpretation of everyday objects, particularly those drawn from the world of the kitchen. Starting in 1989, she focused on the representation of chairs, transforming them into frontal, functionless objects, drawing inspiration from deconstructivism and Cubism. Her installations—such as stacks of unstable plates—evoke a sense of precarious balance and suspended time. These works offer a subtle critique of the German bourgeoisie by diverting ordinary elements to question social and cultural codes.
Ghislaine Vappereau has exhibited her work in various museums and art centers, including Galerie Jacques Lévy in Paris and the contemporary art center Les Tanneries in Amilly. Her work is also part of French public collections, reflecting her significant contribution to contemporary art.
