Louis Faurer American, 1916-2001
After graduating in Philadelphia in 1934, Louis Faurer spent a few summers as a cartoonist in New Jersey. Fascinated by typography, he studied at the School of Commercial Art and Lettering in Philadelphia in 1937 and bought his first camera the same year.
In the late 1940s, Faurer and several of his fellow Philadelphia artists opened studios in New York. He soon focused on fashion photography. In 1947, he joined the Junior Bazaar team (which later became part of Harper’s Bazaar). Faurer was a key member of the New York School of street photographers. During the 1950s, he abandoned his personal practice for his professional commissions. He died in 2001 in New York City.
