Arlene Gottfried

Née à Brooklyn, Arlene Gottfried est diplômée du Fashion Institute of Technology à New York. Elle commença sa carrière comme photographe dans une agence de publicité, avant de travailler à son compte pour des journaux prestigieux.

C’est dans la rue qu’elle développe son travail personnel, photographiant ses amis, ses voisins, capturant le multiculturalisme du quartier de Brooklyn où elle habite. Ses photographies des années 70 et 80 témoignent d’un New York qui n’existe plus, un environnement abrupt dans lequel elle se plaît à évoluer, côtoyant des personnalités excentriques, écumant les festivals, les fêtes de quartier et les défilés. Elle retourne également sur les plages de son enfance ainsi que les boîtes de nuit dans lesquelles, avant l’épidémie du VIH, s’exprimait une grande liberté d’expression personnelle et sexuelle. 

Elle a vécu et travaillé à New York jusqu’à sa mort, en 2017.
